Six short stories about adding and taking away, with numbers that stay within 10 and a box under each one for drawing. The Common Core standards ask kindergartners to solve addition and subtraction word problems within 10 using objects or drawings, and the drawing box is there for exactly that.

Read each problem aloud; most kindergartners aren't reading this much text yet. Then ask your child to act it out with toys or draw circles and cross some out. The answer line includes the unit (marbles, birds), which is a good habit from the start. Next, try 1st grade word problems.

Tips for using it

  • Read aloud and act the story out with toys or snacks.
  • Ask 'Are we putting together or taking away?' before solving.

Questions

Can kindergartners do word problems?

Yes, when the problems are read aloud and they can use objects or drawings. Solving add-to and take-from stories within 10 is a kindergarten standard.

Should my kindergartner write the answer?

Writing the number is great, but drawing or telling the answer counts too. The goal is understanding the story.
