Six 4th grade fraction stories: adding slices of a pizza, adding distances like 3/8 of a mile plus 5/8 of a mile, finding a fraction of a group (3/4 of a class of 28), and recipes made several times (1/4 cup of flour times 5 batches). Answers are in simplest form, with mixed numbers when they're greater than 1.
These match the 4th grade standards: add and subtract fractions with like denominators and multiply a fraction by a whole number in word problems. A bar or circle sketch makes every one of them easier. Change Grade to 3rd for simpler problems or 5th for unlike denominators. For computation practice, see 4th grade fractions.
Divide by the denominator, then multiply by the numerator. 3/4 of 28: 28 ÷ 4 = 7, and 7 × 3 = 21.
Simple ones start in 3rd grade. 4th graders add like fractions and multiply fractions by whole numbers; 5th graders add unlike fractions and multiply fractions.
