Eight 3rd grade story problems without work boxes, so more fit on a page: multiplication and division within 100, adding and subtracting within 1,000, simple fractions of a whole or a set, and two-step problems. The 3rd grade standards ask children to solve two-step word problems using all four operations and to check whether answers are reasonable.

For each one, ask your child which operation the story calls for and why. Equal groups mean multiply or divide; joining or taking away means add or subtract. If your child needs space to work, turn on Box to show work above. For a full 3rd grade check, try the 3rd grade math review.

Tips for using it

  • Estimate first, then check that the answer is close to the estimate.
  • Write a number sentence with a letter for the unknown: 4 × n = 28.

Questions

What word problems do 3rd graders solve?

Multiplication and division within 100 (equal groups, arrays, measurement), addition and subtraction within 1,000, and two-step problems using all four operations.

How do you know whether to multiply or divide?

If you know the number of groups and the size of each group, multiply. If you know the total and one of those, divide.
