Six subtraction story problems with numbers up to 100, covering the main kinds: take away ("gave 9 to a friend"), how many are left ("pages left to read"), compare ("how many more does Omar have than Elijah?") and missing part ("how much more money does she need?").

Compare and missing-part problems are subtraction even though they don't say 'take away', which is why they're on here. A bar model helps: draw the whole, mark the known part, and the unknown part is the answer. Change Grade above for any level from kindergarten to 5th grade. For addition, see addition word problems.

Tips for using it

  • Draw a bar for the whole and shade the part you know.
  • Check subtraction with addition: answer + part = whole.

Questions

What are the types of subtraction word problems?

Taking from (some go away), comparing (how many more or fewer), and missing parts (how many more are needed). All three are solved with subtraction.

Is 'how much more does she need' subtraction?

Yes. You know the goal and how much she has; the difference is what she still needs.
