Six problems that each need two operations: getting more and giving some away, a bus where people get off and on, buying several items and finding the money left, packs of items with some used up, or sharing boxes of apples among classes. The 3rd grade standards ask children to solve two-step word problems using the four operations.
The skill is planning: what do I need to find first? Have your child write the first step's answer on its own line before doing the second step. Change Grade above for 2nd grade (two steps with addition and subtraction) or 4th and 5th grade (bigger numbers).
A problem that needs two calculations, where the answer to the first step is used in the second. Example: 3 boxes of 8 crayons, then 5 are lost: 3 × 8 = 24, then 24 − 5 = 19.
The first answer isn't stated in the problem, so children have to plan. Drawing the story usually reveals the hidden step.
