Six addition story problems with numbers up to 100: putting together ("There are 49 pencils on the table and 36 in a box"), adding to ("finds 14 more"), and totals over time (pages read on Saturday and Sunday). Each comes with a work box and an answer line with the unit.
Addition stories are where children learn that 'in all', 'altogether' and 'total' signal joining, but keywords can mislead, so focus on the action in the story. Change Grade above for sums within 10 (kindergarten) up to five-digit numbers (5th grade). For subtraction stories, see subtraction word problems.
Tips for using it
- Ask what's being joined together, rather than hunting for keywords.
- Write the number sentence before solving: 49 + 36 = ?
