On this CVC worksheet, each word is missing its vowel: c_t, p_g, s_n. Your child chooses from two or three vowels, writes the one that makes a real word, and reads it. That makes them listen for the middle sound, which is the part of a CVC word children most often guess.

Without pictures, a blank like c_t could be cat, cot or cut, so every item here is built so only one of the choices makes a real word. The answer key shows the word and circles the right choice.

All five short vowels are mixed on this sheet. If your child is just starting, pick a single vowel from the pattern menu, or try the sound boxes, read-and-trace or word ladder activities with the same CVC words.

Tips for using it

  • Ask your child to say each choice in the blank out loud (cat, cit, cet) and listen for the real word.
  • If vowels are mixed up a lot, go back to one or two vowels for a week.

Questions

What is a CVC worksheet?

A worksheet that practices consonant-vowel-consonant words, like cat, bed and sun. Common activities are sound boxes, filling in a missing letter, sorting by vowel and reading short sentences.

Why do some items have only two choices?

We only offer choices that make non-words, so there's exactly one right answer. For some short vowel words only one other vowel makes a non-word.
