Short vowels are the quick vowel sounds in cat, bed, pig, hot and bug. They're the first vowel sounds children learn and the ones in most early words, so hearing and reading them accurately matters more than almost anything else in early phonics.

This sheet is a five-column sort. Your child reads each CVC word in the word bank and writes it under short a, e, i, o or u. Because the words differ mostly in the vowel, a child who reads by guessing from the first letter will get stuck, and a child who reads every letter will breeze through.

If five vowels is too many, choose two from the pattern menu, such as short a and short i, and come back to this sheet later.

Tips for using it

  • Say each vowel's key word before starting: apple, egg, itch, octopus, up.
  • Have your child read each column aloud when done; every word should share the vowel sound.

Questions

What are the short vowel sounds?

/a/ as in apple, /e/ as in egg, /i/ as in itch, /o/ as in octopus and /u/ as in up.

What order should short vowels be taught in?

Many programs start with short a, then i, o, u and e. Short e is often last because it's easy to confuse with short i.
