By second grade, phonics turns to vowel teams (ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, igh, oo) and r-controlled vowels (ar, or, er, ir, ur), and reading turns toward fluency. This sheet combines both: decodable sentences full of second grade patterns ("The snail is on the trail." "The third bird can chirp."). Your child reads each sentence, circles the vowel team and r-controlled words, and checks a box for each reread.
Rereading a sentence until it sounds like talking is one of the simplest ways to build fluency. Three reads per sentence is a good target.
If your child stumbles on one pattern, use the pattern menu to practice just that one, with sorts or sound boxes.
Tips for using it
- Time the third read of the whole page once a week. Faster and smoother is the goal, not speed alone.
- Ask your child to find one more word with the same pattern in a book they're reading.

What phonics is taught in 2nd grade?
Vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, diphthongs like oi and ou, and two-syllable words with common suffixes. Exact order varies by program.
My second grader reads words well but slowly. Will this help?
Repeated reading of decodable sentences helps many children read more smoothly. If slow reading persists, talk with the teacher about a fluency check.
