A long vowel says its name, and each one can be spelled more than one way. Long a is a_e (cake), ai (rain) or ay (play); long e is ee (tree) or ea (beach); long i is i_e (bike) or igh (night); long o is o_e (home), oa (boat) or ow (snow); long u is u_e (cube).
On this sort your child reads each word and writes it under its long vowel sound. Each column ends up with several spellings, which is the point: one sound, many spellings. Talk about which spelling shows up most in each column.
Long vowels come after short vowels in nearly every program, usually starting with silent e and then vowel teams.
Tips for using it
- Underline the letters that make the long vowel in each word before sorting.
- Read each column aloud and listen for the shared vowel.
