On this rhyming worksheet, your child reads a word on the left and draws a line to the word on the right that rhymes with it: cake and lake, light and night, bug and plug. Each box mixes different endings, so there's only one rhyme for each word.

The words come from 48 word families, short vowels and long, so some words have digraphs, blends, silent e or vowel teams. That makes this sheet best for first and second graders. For younger children, the kindergarten rhyming sheet uses only short vowel families in larger print.

Rhyming builds phonological awareness, the ability to hear the parts of words. Before reading, play it out loud: say two words and ask, "Do they rhyme?"

Tips for using it

  • Read both words out loud and listen to the endings before drawing a line.
  • Ask your child to add a third rhyme to each pair.

Questions

What do rhyming worksheets teach?

They practice hearing and seeing that words share an ending sound. That supports phonological awareness and, with written words, word families.

Do rhyming words have to be spelled the same?

No, blue and shoe rhyme. On this sheet they're spelled the same way, which also helps with reading.
