This 1st grade spelling worksheet uses unit 11 of our 1st grade list, long a with silent e (cake, game, lake, made, name, same, tape, gave, plate, shake), as a rainbow write sheet. Your child writes each word three times on primary lines, in a different color each time, saying each letter aloud.

Rainbow writing is a good first-day activity because it's low pressure and gets the pattern into the hand. On later days, switch Activity to Word shapes, Missing letters or Unscramble with the same unit, then finish the week with the practice test. Change Unit or group to work on any of the 18 units.

Tips for using it

  • Have your child say the vowel sound and point to the silent e each time they write it.
  • Use crayons or markers in three colors and let your child pick the order.

Questions

What should 1st grade spelling practice look like?

Short, daily and varied: a few minutes of writing words, sorting by pattern or building them with letters, then a quick check at the end of the week.

What is rainbow writing?

Writing each spelling word several times in different colors, often tracing over the first try. It's repetitive, so keep it to one sheet.
