This 2nd grade spelling worksheet practices unit 2, long a spelled ai and ay (rain, mail, paid, wait, tail, train, day, play, stay, gray, may, away). Each word appears as letter boxes with some letters missing, then a primary line to write the whole word; the answer key fills in the missing letters in red.

The word bank at the top helps at first. Once your child knows the words, turn off Show a word bank so they have to recall the spelling, which is the harder and more useful skill. Change Unit or group for any of the 19 units in the 2nd grade list.

Tips for using it

  • Notice the pattern together: ay at the end of a word, ai in the middle.
  • After the sheet, sort the 12 words into an ai column and an ay column.

Questions

How do missing letter worksheets help spelling?

They focus attention on the part of the word that's hard, often the vowel spelling, while keeping the rest of the word in view.

Do the missing letters change each time?

They're fixed for each word so the sheet and answer key always match. Use New problems to reshuffle the word order.
