This 3rd grade spelling worksheet uses unit 7, prefixes un-, re- and pre- (unlock, unhappy, reread, rewrite, preview, preheat and more), as word shape puzzles. Each word gets a row of boxes: tall boxes for letters like b, d, l and t, hanging boxes for g, p and y, and short boxes for the rest. Your child matches each word from the bank to its shape and writes it in.
When two words share a shape, the first letter is printed as a hint so every answer is unique. The answer key fills in every box. Change Unit or group to any of the 16 units, or switch to scrambles, missing letters or a practice test.
Tips for using it
- Have your child cover the prefix and read the base word first.
- Talk about meaning: un- means not, re- means again, pre- means before.

Questions
What are word shape boxes?
Boxes that show each letter's height (tall, short or below the line). Matching words to shapes makes kids look closely at every letter.
Are word shapes good for older kids?
They work best as a quick warm-up through 3rd or 4th grade. Older students get more from roots and meaning-based practice.
