Up to 11 × 9, the 11 times table just repeats the digit: 11 × 4 = 44, 11 × 7 = 77. That makes the first nine facts nearly free. The last three need a strategy: 11 × n = 10 × n + n, so 11 × 11 = 110 + 11 = 121 and 11 × 12 = 120 + 12 = 132.

This page lists the 11s to 11 × 12, adds a shuffled practice column and a skip-counting strip. It's a nice morale boost between the harder 6s, 7s and 8s. Older kids might enjoy a bonus trick for two-digit numbers times 11: write the two digits apart and put their sum in between (11 × 23 → 2, 2 + 3, 3 → 253), carrying when the sum is 10 or more.

For on-screen practice, play the 11 times table game: it opens on the 11s and brings back the facts your child misses.

Tips for using it

  • Make the 10 × n + n strategy explicit for 11 × 10, 11 × 11 and 11 × 12.
  • Count by 11s on a hundreds chart: the numbers fall on a diagonal.

Questions

What is the trick for the 11 times table?

For 1 through 9, repeat the digit: 11 × 6 = 66. For bigger numbers, multiply by 10 and add the number once more.

Do kids need to learn the 11s?

It depends on the curriculum. Common Core focuses on one-digit facts, but many programs and fact tests include 11s and 12s.
