The 5 times table is one of the first kids master because the pattern is so clear: every answer ends in 5 or 0, and the answers count up like minutes on a clock. That clock link is worth using. Each number on a clock face is five more minutes, so 5 × 9 = 45 matches "the 9 means 45 minutes."

This page shows the full 5s list to 5 × 12, a skip-counting strip (5, 10, 15 … 60) and a practice column in mixed order. Another handy fact: 5 × n is half of 10 × n, so 5 × 8 is half of 80, which is 40.

For on-screen practice, play the 5 times table game: it opens on the 5s and brings back the facts your child misses.

Tips for using it

  • Practice with a real analog clock: point at a number and ask how many minutes it means.
  • Count nickels: each one is 5 cents.

Questions

What is the pattern in the 5 times table?

Answers alternate between ending in 5 and ending in 0. Odd numbers times 5 end in 5; even numbers times 5 end in 0.

How does the 5 times table connect to the 10s?

Five of anything is half of ten of it. 5 × 6 is half of 60, so it's 30.
