The 7 times table has the fewest shortcuts, which is why it has a reputation. The good news: by the time kids reach the 7s, they already know most of them. 7 × 2, 7 × 5 and 7 × 10 come from earlier tables, and turnarounds cover 7 × 3, 7 × 4, 7 × 6 and 7 × 9. If they learned the 11s already, the only truly new facts are 7 × 7 = 49, 7 × 8 = 56 and 7 × 12 = 84.

For the rest, split 7 into 5 + 2: 7 × 8 = 40 + 16 = 56. This page has the full list, a shuffled practice column and a skip-counting strip (7, 14, 21 … 84). A memory hook for 7 × 8: "5, 6, 7, 8" reads as 56 = 7 × 8.

For on-screen practice, play the 7 times table game: it opens on the 7s and brings back the facts your child misses.

Tips for using it

  • Write '56 = 7 × 8' in big numbers and say '5, 6, 7, 8' together.
  • Cross off the 7s facts your child already knows from other tables. The short list left is less scary.

Questions

What is the trick for the 7 times table?

Split 7 into 5 and 2. Multiply by each and add: 7 × 6 = 30 + 12 = 42.

Which 7s facts should I focus on?

7 × 7, 7 × 8 and the turnarounds kids haven't connected yet, like 7 × 6. Use the mixed practice column to test them out of order.
