The 4 times table is the 2s doubled. To find 4 × 7, double 7 to get 14, then double again to get 28. Once kids see this "double, double" trick, the 4s go from scary to easy in a few days. Every answer is even, and the ones digits repeat in the pattern 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.

This sheet has the complete 4s list to 4 × 12, a mixed-order practice column, and a skip-counting strip (4, 8, 12 … 48). Use the filled version for reading aloud and the blank version for a quick quiz with the answer key.

For on-screen practice, play the 4 times table game: it opens on the 4s and brings back the facts your child misses.

Tips for using it

  • Say it out loud: 'four times six is double six, twelve, double again, twenty-four.'
  • Have your child check the 4s against the 2s on a multiplication chart: each 4s answer is two 2s answers added.

Questions

What is the trick for the 4 times table?

Double the number, then double it again. 4 × 9: double 9 is 18, double 18 is 36.

Should kids learn the 4s before the 3s?

Either order works. Many programs teach the 4s right after the 2s because of the doubling link.
