Roll and read turns word practice into a game. The board has six rows, one for each face of a die, with CVC words in each row. Roll the die, read any word in that row, and color its box. The first row to fill up wins, or play until the whole board is colored.

With two players, take turns and use different colors. With one player, race a timer, or try to color the whole board in two games.

The board mixes all five short vowels. Press New problems for a fresh board, or pick one vowel for a beginner. You'll need one regular six-sided die.

Tips for using it

  • If a word is read wrong, don't color it. Sound it out together and try again next turn.
  • Laminate the sheet or slide it into a sheet protector and use dry-erase markers to replay it.

Questions

How do you play roll and read?

Roll a die, find the row with that many dots, read a word in the row and color it. Keep going until a row (or the whole board) is full.

What else can I use instead of a die?

Any random pick works: a spinner, a card from 1 to 6, or a parent calling out a number.
