CVC sentences use only CVC words and a handful of sight words, so a child who can blend short vowel words can read every word. "A hog sat on a log." "The pup dug in the mud." Short, silly and readable.

This sheet mixes all five short vowels. Your child reads each sentence, circles the CVC words, and checks a box for each reread. The answer key circles every CVC word, including names like Sam and Tim, which are decodable too.

The sight words used are the ones children meet first (the, a, is, to, his, has), so make sure those are familiar before handing over the sheet.

Tips for using it

  • Point under each word as your child reads, then let them read it again without help.
  • After reading, have your child draw a tiny sketch of one sentence on the back. It shows they understood it.
