This short a sheet uses sound boxes, also called Elkonin boxes after the Russian psychologist D. B. Elkonin. Each short a word has three boxes with a dot under each. Your child reads the word, touches each dot while saying the sounds (/c/ /a/ /t/), then writes one letter in each box.
Segmenting a word into sounds is the flip side of blending, and it's the skill children need for spelling. Doing both with the same words makes each one easier.
Every word on the sheet is a short a CVC word from families like -at, -an, -ap and -ag. When short a is easy, try the short i sheet, then mix the two.
Boxes drawn in a row, one per sound, that children use to break a word into its sounds. They were developed by D. B. Elkonin and are widely used in phonemic awareness and phonics teaching.
Three, one for each sound: consonant, short a, consonant.
