A word ladder starts with one word and changes one letter at a time: hot, hop, top, tip. Each step tells your child exactly what to change ("Change h to t"), and every rung is a real CVC word, so they read and spell a new word at each step.

These ladders start with short o words and stay at the CVC level, so a rung may switch to another short vowel. That's on purpose: changing the vowel (top to tip) is one of the best ways to make children notice it.

Ladders are a quick, game-like way to practice what reading teachers call word chains, which UFLI and many other programs use daily.

Tips for using it

  • Read the whole ladder from the top when it's done. Then read it again from the bottom.
  • Use letter tiles first, then write. Swapping a tile makes the change visible.

Questions

What is a word ladder?

A chain of words where each word differs from the one before by one letter. Children make the change and read the new word.

Why do some rungs have a different vowel?

Changing the vowel is part of the practice. It trains children to read every letter, especially the vowel in the middle.
