Read, trace, write is a simple routine that connects reading and spelling. Your child reads a short i word in bold, traces it in gray on handwriting lines, then writes it alone. Saying each sound while tracing it ties the letter to the sound.

The words are short i CVC words from the -it, -in, -ip, -ig and -id families. Twelve fit on one page at a comfortable size; change the count or font size if your child needs more space.

For a challenge, fold the page so the bold word is hidden and ask your child to write the word from the sound alone.

Tips for using it

  • Say each sound as you trace its letter: /p/ /i/ /g/.
  • Turn off the guide lines in the options if your child writes on plain lines at school.
