This 1st grade word search uses short-vowel words with blends and digraphs, the spelling patterns most first graders practice: frog, crab, sled and plant (blends), ship, chin, think and lunch (digraphs), plus endings like -ck in duck and -ll in bell. Each puzzle hides 10 words in a 10 × 10 grid, across and down only.
The jump from kindergarten is a bigger grid and longer words, not trickier directions. That keeps the focus on reading and spelling patterns. As your child finds each word, ask which letters make one sound together (sh, ch, th, ck). When across and down feel easy, move up to the 2nd grade word search, which adds diagonal words.
Tips for using it
