This 5th grade word search hides 16 challenging words in a 16 × 16 grid in every direction: necessary, government, independence, restaurant, temperature, embarrass, exaggerate, recognize, especially and other words fifth graders meet in reading and social studies.
Several of these words have letters that are easy to drop or double (necessary has one c and two s's; embarrass has two r's and two s's). Finding them backwards or on a diagonal makes kids check every letter. Turn the puzzle into vocabulary practice by asking for a sentence for each word, or turn off the word list and give the definitions as clues for an extra-hard version.
Tips for using it
- Have your child mark doubled letters in each word with a dot.
- Use the found words as a quick vocabulary quiz: say the word, then ask for a definition.
