This 2nd grade word search moves into the spelling patterns second graders usually study: silent-e words (cake, bike, rope, cute), vowel teams (rain, boat, tree, play), igh (light, night, bright) and r-controlled vowels (horse, shirt, start, storm). Each puzzle hides 12 words in a 12 × 12 grid.
This is the first grade level where words also run diagonally. That's a real step up in visual scanning, so if your child gets frustrated, switch to Easy for the first try and come back to Medium. Encourage them to say the vowel sound in each word as they find it; noticing that ai, ay and a-e can all spell the same sound is the big idea of 2nd grade spelling.
Tips for using it
- Sort found words by vowel sound: long a, long i, long o and the r-controlled ones.
- Time the puzzle once a week with a new grid and watch the minutes drop.
