This 3rd grade word search focuses on words third graders often misspell because they don't follow simple patterns: because, enough, through, thought, caught, believe, friend, people and beautiful, plus words with prefixes and suffixes like unhappy, careful and quickly. Each puzzle hides 14 words across, down and diagonally in a 14 × 14 grid.

Tricky words are exactly where a word search helps, because kids have to hold the exact letter order in mind to spot them. Encourage your child to look at the list, cover a word, picture it, then find it. When they can, have them point out the odd part of each word (the ough in enough, the ie in friend). The 4th grade word search adds backwards words for kids ready for more.

Tips for using it

  • Have your child highlight the tricky part of each word in the word list.
  • After the puzzle, dictate five of the words and have your child spell them without looking.

Questions

What spelling words should a 3rd grader know?

Most 3rd grade programs cover vowel teams, words with prefixes and suffixes, homophones and common irregular words like because, through and enough. Use your child's list for exact matches.

Is this too hard for a struggling 3rd grade reader?

Switch to Easy and 10 words. Longer words are still good practice even when they only run across and down.
