This 4th grade word search uses longer, multi-syllable spelling words (environment, character, adventure, knowledge, neighbor, separate, receive, February) and hides 15 of them in a 15 × 15 grid in all eight directions, including backwards.
Backwards and diagonal-up words make a 4th grader slow down and check every letter, which is good practice for the silent letters and doubled consonants in words like knowledge, wrinkle and whistle. Separate and receive are famously easy to misspell, so they're worth extra attention. If your child's class sends home a list, use My own words to make a matching puzzle.
Tips for using it
- Ask your child to split each word into syllables after finding it: en-vi-ron-ment.
- For receive, teach the rhyme: i before e, except after c.

Are backwards words too hard for 4th grade?
Most 4th graders handle them well, and they help kids notice letter order. If it's frustrating, choose Medium for diagonals without backwards words.
How many words should a 4th grade word search have?
Around 15 words in a 15 × 15 grid takes most 4th graders 15 to 20 minutes.
