This kindergarten word search keeps everything small and big at the same time: 8 short CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant, like cat, sun, map and bug) in an 8 × 8 grid with extra-large lowercase letters. Words only go across and down, the same directions kids read and write.

CVC words are the first words most kindergartners learn to sound out, so the puzzle doubles as phonics practice. Before your child starts, have them read each word in the list by tapping out the sounds: c-a-t, cat. Then they search. If finding 8 words is too much at first, lower Number of words to 6. Once these are easy, the Dolch pre-primer sight word search and the 1st grade word search are the natural next steps.

Tips for using it

  • Have your child put a finger on the first letter of a word, then look right and down for the next letter.
  • Let kids circle with a crayon instead of a pencil. Big circles are easier for small hands.

Questions

Can kindergartners do word searches?

Yes, once they know their letters. Keep the words short, the grid small and the directions simple (across and down), like this one. Expect to help with the first word or two.

What are CVC words?

Three-letter words made of a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant, such as cat, pig, hen, mop and bus. They are usually the first words kids learn to blend.
