Math has its own vocabulary, and kids who mix up product and sum, or numerator and denominator, lose points they shouldn't. This math word search picks 15 words from a 30-word bank of elementary math terms: sum, difference, product, quotient, fraction, decimal, numerator, denominator, perimeter, area, volume, polygon, symmetry, factor and more.

Use it as a warm-up before a test or a review at the end of a unit. The best follow-up takes two minutes: for each word your child finds, ask for an example. Product? 3 × 4 = 12, so 12 is the product. Words they can't explain are the ones to practice. The math crossword uses the same bank with definitions as clues.

Tips for using it

  • Ask your child to draw a quick picture for each geometry word they find.
  • Pair the four answer words (sum, difference, product, quotient) with their operations.

Questions

What grade is the math word search for?

Grades 2 to 5. Words like sum, even and odd fit 2nd grade; quotient, numerator, denominator and perimeter fit 3rd to 5th.

What's the difference between area and perimeter?

Perimeter is the distance around a shape, so you add the side lengths. Area is the space inside it, so for a rectangle you multiply length by width.
