This plant word search covers the parts of a plant and how plants grow, the plant vocabulary found in most elementary science units. Each puzzle picks 15 words from a bank of 28: roots, stem, leaf, petal, pollen, nectar, bud, bulb, seedling, germinate, pollinate, chlorophyll and photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis has 14 letters, so the grid grows to fit when it's picked. Use the puzzle the same week you sprout a bean in a wet paper towel: kids can see the root, stem and first leaves while the words are fresh. For younger kids, choose Easy and 10 words; the bank's short words (seed, stem, leaf, bud, soil) come up often in a small grid.

Tips for using it

  • Draw a plant and label each part your child found in the puzzle.
  • Ask kids to put seed, sprout, seedling and flower in order.

Questions

What is photosynthesis, in kid terms?

It's how plants make their own food. Leaves use energy from sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide from the air into sugar, and they give off oxygen.

Do all plants grow from seeds?

No. Ferns and mosses grow from spores, and some plants, like tulips, can also grow from bulbs.
