This space word search draws 15 words from a 28-word solar system bank: all eight planets, the sun and moon, Pluto, and space-science words like asteroid, comet, galaxy, Milky Way, orbit, gravity, constellation, eclipse and satellite.

Use it to review a space unit or as a warm-up before one. Most kids can name a few planets; few can spell Neptune or Uranus without help, and finding them in a grid helps. After the puzzle, ask your child to list the planets they found in order from the sun (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune). Pluto is in the bank as a dwarf planet, which it has been officially called since 2006.

Tips for using it

  • Use the mnemonic My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos to remember the planet order.
  • Have kids mark the planets in one color and other space objects in another.

Questions

Is Pluto a planet?

Not anymore. In 2006 the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet because it hasn't cleared its orbit of other objects. It's still in the word bank, labeled as a dwarf planet.

Which planet is the largest?

Jupiter. More than 1,300 Earths could fit inside it. Mercury is the smallest planet, and Venus is the hottest.
