A 0–10 number line is the right first number line: few enough numbers that each tick is far apart and easy to touch, with labels big enough for preschool and kindergarten eyes. This sheet has six identical lines so a child can work through several problems on one page, one line per problem.
Use it for counting on ("start at 4, count three more"), early addition and subtraction within 10, and comparing numbers ("which is closer to 10, 6 or 8?"). The Common Core standards ask kindergartners to add and subtract fluently within 5 and to understand numbers to 10, so this range fits the whole kindergarten year.
Tips for using it
- Use a small toy as a 'hopper' instead of a pencil for little hands.
- Ask for the number that is one more or one less than a given number, and find it on the line.

Should a number line for kindergarten start at 0 or 1?
Start at 0. Kids need to see that hopping 3 from 0 lands on 3, which only works if the line starts at zero.
How many number lines are on the page?
Six. You can change that with Number lines per sheet, from 1 for a big wall line up to 12.
