The 0–20 number line is the workhorse of 1st and 2nd grade math. It covers every sum and difference within 20, the range the Common Core standards expect 1st graders to add and subtract within and 2nd graders to master from memory. This sheet prints five 0–20 lines, one per problem.

The line makes "making ten" visible, the key strategy for facts like 8 + 5: hop 2 to reach 10, then 3 more to land on 13. For subtraction, kids can count back or count up ("from 9 to 15 is 6 hops"). When they are ready, switch Numbers shown to Some missing to practice the sequence itself.

Tips for using it

  • Mark 10 with a highlighter so it stands out as the 'friendly' halfway stop.
  • Write a problem above each line, like 14 − 6, and have your child draw the hops.

Questions

How do you subtract on a number line to 20?

Start at the bigger number and hop left for the number you take away. For 15 − 7, start at 15 and hop back seven times to 8. You can also count up from 7 to 15, which is also 8 hops.

What is making ten on a number line?

Breaking a hop into two parts so you stop at 10. For 7 + 6, hop 3 to get to 10, then 3 more to 13.
