Twenty-five two-digit plus two-digit problems stacked in columns, some needing regrouping and some not. In the Common Core standards, 2nd graders add fluently within 100 and add up to four two-digit numbers using place value.
Mixing regrouping and no regrouping matters: children have to look at each problem and decide whether to carry, instead of carrying out of habit. If carrying is new, start with 2-digit addition without regrouping, then practice addition with regrouping before coming back to this mixed sheet.
Tips for using it
- Always add the ones column first, then the tens.
- Before solving, have your child put a small dot over problems that will need carrying.

Questions
Do 2nd graders need to carry in addition?
Yes. Adding within 100 with regrouping is a core 2nd grade skill. Many programs introduce it with base-ten blocks before the written method.
Why do some sums have three digits?
Two two-digit numbers can add to more than 99, like 76 + 58 = 134. That is a good chance to talk about regrouping tens into a hundred.
