Twenty problems that add a two-digit number to a three-digit number, so most sums stay within 1,000. The Common Core standards ask 3rd graders to add and subtract fluently within 1,000 using place value, and this is the step between 2nd-grade two-digit sums and full three-digit addition.

Regrouping shows up in the ones, the tens or both, so children have to track carries across two columns. When this feels easy, try 3-digit addition or a 3rd grade math review that mixes addition with multiplication, rounding and fractions.

Tips for using it

  • Estimate first: 468 + 57 is about 470 + 60, so the answer should be near 530.
  • Write carried digits small and above the next column so they don't get mixed up with the problem.

Questions

What addition should a 3rd grader be able to do?

Add fluently within 1,000 using place value, properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Can I make it three-digit plus three-digit?

Yes. Set Second number to 3-digit. Sums can then pass 1,000, which is fine for strong 3rd graders.
