Thirty horizontal addition facts with both numbers from 0 to 10, for sums up to 20. The Common Core standards ask 1st graders to add within 20 and to be fluent within 10, using strategies like counting on, making ten and doubles.

The horizontal layout nudges children toward mental math instead of stacking. Watch for which strategy your child uses: counting all, counting on, or knowing the fact. Facts that still need counting are the ones to practice. Once these are quick, try addition and subtraction for 1st grade or move up to 2nd grade addition.

Tips for using it

  • Teach make-ten: 9 + 6 becomes 10 + 5.
  • Doubles first (5 + 5, 7 + 7), then near doubles (7 + 8 is a double plus 1).

Questions

What is fluency within 10?

Answering sums like 6 + 3 or 4 + 4 quickly and accurately, without counting on fingers. It frees working memory for harder problems.

How many problems should a 1st grader do at once?

Ten to twenty is plenty for most 6-year-olds. Use Number of problems to make the sheet shorter.
