Twenty big, horizontal addition problems that add two numbers from 0 to 5, so every sum is 10 or less. The Common Core standards ask kindergartners to add within 10 and to be fluent adding within 5, and this sheet covers exactly that range.

Keep counters, blocks or fingers nearby at first. Children who are just starting can draw dots under each number and count them all; once that feels easy, they can count on from the bigger number. When most answers come quickly, move up to 1st grade addition worksheets.

Tips for using it

  • Count on from the bigger number: for 2 + 5, start at 5 and count 6, 7.
  • Adding 0 is a great first conversation: nothing added means nothing changes.
  • Keep sessions to 5 or 10 minutes; stop while it is still fun.

Questions

What addition should a kindergartner know?

Kindergartners should understand addition as putting together, add within 10 using objects or drawings, and add within 5 fluently by the end of the year.

Should kindergartners use fingers to add?

Yes. Fingers and objects are how children build number sense. They naturally move to counting on and then to memory with practice.
