Twenty three-digit plus three-digit problems, each needing at least one carry, so children practice regrouping across the ones, tens and hundreds. Some sums pass 1,000 and need a fourth digit, which is a good check that the hundreds carry is understood.
This fits late 2nd grade (adding within 1,000 using models) and 3rd grade (fluency within 1,000). For a gentler start, set Regrouping to Never; for subtraction practice at the same level, try 3-digit subtraction.
Tips for using it
- Estimate by rounding to hundreds before solving, then compare.
- If a carry is forgotten, ask your child to add the column out loud again.

Questions
How do you teach 3-digit addition with regrouping?
Add the ones; if they make 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry the ten. Do the same for tens into hundreds. Base-ten blocks make the trade visible.
Is 3-digit addition 2nd or 3rd grade?
Both. 2nd graders add within 1,000 using models and strategies. 3rd graders are expected to be fluent with it.
