Eight elapsed-time problems with analog clocks. Some show a start time and an amount of time ("1 hour 25 minutes later") and ask for the end time; others show a start clock and an end clock and ask how much time passed. Times move in five-minute steps and sometimes cross an hour or 12 o'clock, which is where most mistakes happen.

The 3rd grade standard asks children to solve elapsed time problems by adding and subtracting time intervals in minutes, for example on a number line. A good method: jump to the next hour first, then add the rest. For simpler steps, change Times to quarter hour; for 3rd grade practice, see elapsed time for 3rd grade.

Tips for using it

  • Jump to the next whole hour first, then count the remaining hours and minutes.
  • Sketch a time number line with the start, the jumps and the end.

Questions

What is elapsed time?

The amount of time that passes from a start time to an end time. From 2:40 to 4:15 is 1 hour 35 minutes.

How do you find elapsed time?

Count up from the start to the next hour, then whole hours, then the remaining minutes, and add the parts. From 2:40, 20 minutes gets to 3:00, 1 hour to 4:00, and 15 minutes to 4:15: 1 hour 35 minutes.
