How to use it
- Choose the activity
Read the clock, draw the hands, both on one sheet, or elapsed time.
- Choose the times
To the hour, half hour, quarter hour, 5 minutes or minute. Elapsed times step by the same amount.
- Set up the clock face
Show numbers 1–12, only 12, 3, 6 and 9, or none; add minute tick marks and minute labels (5, 10, 15 …) if helpful.
- Print
Pick 4 to 30 clocks, then print or download the PDF. The answer key writes the times or draws the hands in red.
How to use the telling time worksheet generator
Start with Activity. Read the clock draws the hands and leaves blanks for the hour and minutes. Draw the hands prints an empty clock with a digital time underneath, and the key draws the hands in red. Read and draw mixes both on one sheet, which catches children who can read a clock but not build one. Elapsed time shows a start clock and an amount of time ("1 hour 25 minutes later") or a start and an end clock, and asks for the end time or the time that passed.
Times sets the precision. Each step includes the easier times: a quarter-hour sheet still has o'clock and half-past times, so practice stays mixed. Under Clock face, children who are learning to count by fives benefit from minute labels. Faces with only 12, 3, 6 and 9 are a good stretch once the basics are solid, and no numbers at all is a real test.
What makes a good telling time worksheet
- Accurate hour hands. On a real clock the hour hand creeps toward the next number. Worksheets that point it straight at the hour teach a habit children have to unlearn; these clocks always place it correctly.
- Both directions. Reading and drawing use different skills, so practice both.
- No repeats. Times are dealt without repeats until every possible time has been used.
- Small steps. Move from hours to half hours to five minutes to the minute, not all at once.
Skill progression by grade
| Grade | Standard | Try |
|---|---|---|
| K–1 | Tell and write time to the hour and half hour | Time to the hour, half hour |
| 1–2 | Quarter hours (a helpful step between standards) | Quarter past and quarter to |
| 2 | Nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m. | Time to 5 minutes |
| 3 | Nearest minute; elapsed time in minutes | Nearest minute, elapsed time |
Printing tips
Clocks print large enough to draw on comfortably: three or four across depending on how many you choose. For the youngest children, choose fewer clocks (8 or 9) so each face is bigger. Laminate a sheet of empty clocks and use a dry-erase marker for endless drawing practice.
When worksheets aren't enough
Time sticks best when it's part of daily life: an analog clock in the kitchen and a habit of asking "What time is it?" at meals and bedtime. For structured practice, programs like SplashLearn, IXL and Mathseeds include time and money units with instant feedback. Questions
Does the hour hand move between the numbers?
Yes, like a real clock. At 3:45 the hour hand is three-quarters of the way from 3 to 4, which is the detail children most need to practice.
What are minute labels?
Small numbers (5, 10, 15 … 55) printed around the outside of the clock. They help children count by fives while learning, and can be turned off once they're not needed.
Can the generator make elapsed time worksheets?
Yes. Choose Elapsed time and then End time (start clock plus an amount of time), Time passed (start and end clocks) or both.
