Twelve clocks set to quarter hours: o'clock, quarter past (:15), half past (:30) and quarter to (:45). Quarter hours connect telling time to fractions: the minute hand moves a quarter of the way around for each 15 minutes.
Quarter to is the hardest: at 8:45 the hour hand is nearly at 9, but the time is still 8:45 (a quarter to 9). Talk through both ways of saying each time. This sits between the 1st grade half hour and the 2nd grade five-minute standards.
Tips for using it
- Show quarters by folding a paper plate clock into four.
- Say both forms: 'eight forty-five' and 'quarter to nine.'

Questions
What does quarter to mean?
Fifteen minutes before the next hour. Quarter to 9 is 8:45: the minute hand points to 9 and the hour hand is almost at 9.
Is quarter hour time in the Common Core standards?
Not by name. 1st grade covers hours and half-hours and 2nd grade covers five minutes, so quarter hours are a natural step in between.
