Twelve problems multiplying a three-digit number by a two-digit number, laid out three across so there is room for the two partial products and the sum. The Common Core standards expect 5th graders to fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Two-digit multipliers are where place value matters most: the second partial product is really a tens product, which is why it gets a zero placeholder. If that step is new, warm up with 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication. For bigger challenges, try multi-digit multiplication.
The column method: multiply the top number by each digit of the bottom number to get partial products, shifting one place left for the tens digit, then add the partial products.
Multi-digit problems take time. Ten to fifteen is a solid session; accuracy matters more than volume.
