Ten long multiplication problems, each a four-digit number times a two-digit number, two across so there's space for both partial products and the final sum. This is 5th grade work in the Common Core standards (fluent multi-digit multiplication with the standard algorithm), and good review for 6th graders.

Long multiplication rewards neatness: keep digits in columns, write the placeholder zero, and add carefully. Estimate every answer first. To work up to this level, try 5th grade multiplication (3-digit × 2-digit). Change the numbers above for 3-digit × 3-digit challenges.

Tips for using it

  • Turn lined paper sideways or use graph paper to keep digits in columns.
  • Estimate: 4,682 × 37 is about 5,000 × 40 = 200,000.

Questions

What is multi-digit multiplication?

Multiplying numbers with two or more digits each, like 4,682 × 37, using partial products and the standard algorithm.

How do I check long multiplication?

Estimate by rounding both numbers, or reverse the problem: multiply 37 × 4,682 a different way, like with an area model.
