A 10-year-old is usually in 5th grade, or in 4th grade if they turned 10 after the fall cutoff.
With a September 1 cutoff, 5th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2015, and September 1, 2016, and 4th graders between September 2, 2016, and September 1, 2017. Fifth grade is the last year of elementary school in many districts, and in others it's the start of an intermediate or middle school. Math focuses on fractions and decimals; writing moves to research and multi-paragraph essays. A child who started kindergarten late, or moved from a state with an earlier cutoff, may be a 10-year-old 4th grader.
Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.
Either is normal. A child who turned 10 by the state cutoff is usually in 5th grade; one who turns 10 during the school year is usually in 4th.
Not really. Children who turn 10 in the fall, winter or spring of their 4th grade year are right on track. A 10-year-old who was already 10 at the start of 4th grade is older than most classmates, often because of a late start or a repeated year.
Typical 5th grade skills include adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, working with decimals to the hundredths, writing organized essays, and reading longer novels independently.
