A 16-year-old is usually in 11th grade (a junior), or in 10th grade if they turned 16 after the fall cutoff.
With a September 1 cutoff, 11th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2009, and September 1, 2010, and 10th graders between September 2, 2010, and September 1, 2011. Junior year is the big college-planning year: the PSAT in October counts for National Merit, most students take the SAT or ACT in the spring, and grades this year weigh heavily in applications. It's also the most common year to start dual enrollment.
Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.
Tips for using it
- Mark the October PSAT date if your 16-year-old might qualify for National Merit; homeschoolers register through a local school.
- Keep course descriptions as you go; colleges often ask homeschool applicants for them.

Questions
Is a 16-year-old in 10th or 11th grade?
Either is normal. A child who turned 16 by the state cutoff is usually in 11th grade; one who turns 16 during the school year is usually in 10th.
Can you leave school at 16?
It depends on the state. Compulsory attendance ends at 16 in some states and at 17 or 18 in others, often with exceptions. Leaving school is different from homeschooling, which counts as education under state law.
