A 15-year-old is usually in 10th grade (a sophomore), or in 9th grade if they turned 15 after the fall cutoff.
In states with a September 1 cutoff, 10th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2010, and September 1, 2011, and 9th graders between September 2, 2011, and September 1, 2012. Sophomore year is often Geometry or Algebra II, biology or chemistry, and a second year of a foreign language. Many students take the PSAT for practice in 10th grade, and it's a good time to look at dual-enrollment rules in your state.
Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.
Either. A child who turned 15 by the fall cutoff is usually in 10th grade; one who turns 15 during the school year is usually in 9th.
Sometimes. Dual-enrollment rules are set by each state and college. Some admit students by test scores at 15 or younger, while others start in 11th grade or at 16.
