11th grade or 12th grade

A 17-year-old is usually in 11th grade or 12th grade. Which one depends on their birthday and your state's kindergarten cutoff (September 1 in most states).

For 2026–27: 12th grade if born Sep 2, 2008 – Sep 1, 2009.

11th grade if born Sep 2, 2009 – Sep 1, 2010.

Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Some families wait a year to start kindergarten (often called redshirting), some schools allow early entry, and homeschoolers can place a child by readiness in each subject.

A 17-year-old is usually in 12th grade (a senior), or in 11th grade if they turned 17 after the fall cutoff.

In states with a September 1 cutoff, 12th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2007, and September 1, 2008, and 11th graders between September 2, 2008, and September 1, 2009. Most seniors start the year at 17 and turn 18 before graduation. Senior year is college applications, the FAFSA, and finishing graduation requirements. Homeschool parents issue the diploma and transcript themselves in most states.

Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.

Tips for using it

  • Finish the transcript early in senior year; many application deadlines fall in November and January.
  • Calculate both weighted and unweighted GPA and say on the transcript which scale you used.

Questions

Is a 17-year-old in 11th or 12th grade?

Either. A student who turned 17 by the fall cutoff is usually a senior; one who turns 17 during the school year is usually a junior.

Can a 17-year-old graduate high school?

Yes. Most seniors are 17 when the school year starts. Students who finish requirements early can graduate at 16 or 17, and homeschool parents can award a diploma when their student completes the program they set.
