High school seniors (12th graders) are usually 17 years old at the start of the year and turn 18 during it. So most 12th graders are 17 or 18.
With a September 1 cutoff, seniors in 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2007, and September 1, 2008, so most will turn 18 before graduation in spring 2027. Senior year means finishing graduation requirements, college applications and financial aid forms. In most states, homeschool parents issue the diploma and transcript themselves. Students with fall birthdays, or who started school late, may be 18 for most of senior year.
The calculator above shows exact 12th grade birthdates for your state: choose a state and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Homeschool families in most states choose their child's grade themselves and can work at different levels by subject; if your state requires testing or evaluations at certain grades, factor that in.
Tips for using it
- Finish the transcript, with weighted and unweighted GPA, before early application deadlines in November.
- Keep a copy of the diploma, transcript and course descriptions in a safe place; colleges and employers may ask for them years later.
