A 14-year-old is usually in 9th grade (a high school freshman), or in 8th grade if they turned 14 after the fall cutoff.
With a September 1 cutoff, 9th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2011, and September 1, 2012, and 8th graders between September 2, 2012, and September 1, 2013. Ninth grade is when high school credits usually start counting toward graduation and a transcript. For homeschoolers, that means picking courses, tracking credits and grades, and calculating a GPA from this year on.
Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.
Either is normal. A child who turned 14 by the state cutoff is usually in 9th grade; one who turns 14 during the school year is usually in 8th.
Usually in 9th grade. High school-level courses taken earlier, such as Algebra I in 8th grade, can often be listed too. One credit is commonly a full-year course, often around 120–180 hours of work.
